Supplies You Might Require If You Are Practicing Yoga
Yoga is all about leaving the materialistic world, but practicing yoga is easier with a few pieces of basic yoga items. The items most often used for practicing yoga are blocks, blankets, loose clothing, balls and straps to make positioning easier. Specific types of yoga use different pieces of yoga equipment, but mats and loose clothing are used in most types. Some yoga equipment is used to help the body to align into the poses, which are also referred to as asanas. Aligning properly is important in many poses in order to move properly and not injury any muscles or tendons.
Any clothing worn during yoga should be extremely comfortable. The clothing should not be so restrictive that it keeps the mind on the physical. But, yoga clothing shouldn’t be too loose, or it can make some poses more difficult. The shirt worn in yoga should have enough tailoring so that poses done with the head lowered will not end with it falling downward over the head. The pants worn in yoga should not be slick, as that can cause slipping out of some of the more difficult poses. Yoga is never practiced while wearing shoes, particularly not in yoga classes.
Yoga mats are often used in order to keep a small personal space during yoga that is performed in a gym. A cushiony surface is provided by a yoga mat, which is much more comfortable than a bare floor. The primary purpose, however, is for an added measure of traction that can help during difficult poses. A floor without a mat can become more slippery as the routine goes on and sweat starts to build up. Yoga mats are sometimes referred to as sticky mats and are often available in yoga classes.
Yoga blankets are optional for most yoga types. Blankets are sometimes used over a mat to provide more cushioning. They can be put beneath different points on the body to keep specific poses. Blankets can be folded up and placed into arrangements that help make poses easier. To stay warm while meditating, many yoga practitioners wrap themselves in a blanket. Yoga blocks are used much like yoga blankets. They are often used in yoga to help the body align better during certain poses. Yoga blocks are useful when standing in a pose in order to make them easier.
Yoga straps are used to help with some difficult yoga poses. There are several difficult yoga poses that require challenging physical arrangements. Yoga straps are used to assist people with reaching body parts they may have trouble reaching, and to hold poses that are difficult for them. A yoga ball can be used in any number of ways. The ball can be leaned on or sat on for challenging poses. Balls can be used as a support for the back during back bends. They can also help with strength training.

Yoga is made up of many types of disciplines that seek to bring people out of their own, material lives and into a state of harmony with a Supreme Being. There is no strict way of doing any type of yoga. Every yoga type has its own guidelines, and each has its own individual goals. The various yoga types are used to achieve mental strength and clarity, spirituality, physical well being, or calm. There are types of yoga that have been modified by Western practitioners from the original Hindu versions, while others have stayed true to the original practices. Mantras, breathing exercises or poses begin most types of yoga.
Hatha yoga is one type that has remained in vogue in the U.S. due to its easy poses and lulling effect. In hatha yoga, the poses start after the practitioner has become relaxed and quiet. Gentle stretching is the hatha method for achieving goals. Bhakti yoga is devoted to love. The main goal of bhakti yoga is to create a closer connection with God. Bhakti yoga does not depend on yoga poses, but a visualization of the Supreme Being. The goal is to send a constant stream of love and awareness to God.
Karma yoga focuses on achieving selflessness in order to better serve humanity. The practitioner of this type of yoga seeks to commit selfless acts without expecting anything in return. Karma yoga practitioners seek to act positively and expect to then have positivity acted upon them. Karma yoga remains one of the most practiced forms of yoga in India. Stillness is achieved in mantra yoga by repeating a specific mantra over and over. Once stillness has been achieved, the mantra stops, and the stillness leads to a deep meditative state. Higher consciousness is achieved by the meditative state.
Jnana yoga practitioners seek out a higher level of knowledge. Jnana uses meditation to achieve enlightenment after thoughts and feelings are left behind. Kundalini yoga seeks to strengthen the connection between the mind and body. A part of kundalini yoga is using sexual experiences in order to strengthen the bond. Physical touch is used as a means to connect the body and the emotions. Purna yoga was once a way to bring about salvation, thereby improving the conditions of the next life. The spirituality of this life is now the focus of this yoga type. Through diet, mediation and poses, purna yoga brings enlightenment. Purna is a way to learn to love the self in order to achieve a higher spirituality.
Raja yoga is often called classical yoga. It is a way of getting a better state of harmony between the mental and physical. Raja yoga achieves a state of holistic healing that makes life more peaceful. The raja poses are a way to prepare for meditating, though the ultimate focus is on the mental state.

The GI Diet focuses on a ranking for carbohydrates based on how they affect the body’s glucose level. It was originally created by Dr. David Jenkins to help diabetic patients. This diet is helpful for diabetic patients who need to control their blood sugar instead of eating things that cause rapid changes in blood sugar.
The way each food breaks down in the body during digestion determines itsrating. The number that is assigned to each food signifies how quickly glucose will be released because of the carbs. Foods that have a high GI rating will cause blood sugar to rise more rapidly than a food with a low GI raking. Glucose is rated 100. Foods are rated for their comparability to glucose, where the lowest score is zero. Foods that come with a GI ranking of up to 55 are considered low GI. Ratings that are 56 to 69 will be considered foods with a medium GI. With a rating or 70 or higher, high glycemic index foods cause glucose to be released the fastest.
Eating low GI foods is the goal in order to stabilize blood glucose. This will require the body to make less insulin. The foods that have been rated with a low GI ranking will provide a much more stable source of energy and help the dieter to avoid being hungry later. To keep hunger away and energy level throughout the day, the dieter eats low GI foods. Foods that have been rated with a high GI number are a source of fast energy, but also a source of an energy crash. The diet causes weight loss by keeping away the cravings that are caused by low blood glucose levels.
Another way that the diet works for weight loss is to require the dieter to eat very little fat. Some foods have been rated with quite a low GI number, but they still contain too much fat. Those foods are to be avoided along with high GI foods. When a dieter stays on the diet, eating the proper foods and avoiding high-fat foods, about 1 to 2 pounds can be lost every week. This steady weight loss is the type recommended by most doctors, as a more rapid weight loss can be unhealthy.
Studies have shown the GI Diet to reduce the risk of several diseases, including heart disease and diabetes. The diet is recommended by the American Diabetes Association because of the lowered diabetes risk. Nutritionists, as well as doctors, support this diet because it allows a steady weight loss and an improvement in patients’ overall health. Staying on the diet for years, and finding an effective GI meal plan, is the best way to get the most out of the diet. Many meals have foods that have different GI ratings, which can make it hard to figure out the ranking for that meal. Meals made for the GI diet have low GI ranked foods so that figuring out the GI number of the meal is mush easier. With a GI meal plan, a dieter can keep energy levels steady as well as lose weight.

There are foods that have negative calories, requiring more calories from the body to use them than the food originally had. One of those foods is cabbage, which gave the Cabbage Soup Diet its name. This is a diet for short term use to enable a dieter to lose some extra weight quickly. Some people use the diet as a way to kick start weight loss before beginning a different diet. It can also help a dieter to drop some pounds before attending a special event.
The diet was named for the large amount of the soup that is allowed during each day of the diet. The more that the dieter eats the cabbage soup, the more calories the body uses because of that soup. The seven day plan calls for other foods in addition to the soup, though the items allowed are strictly limited. The diet has a seven-day plan for meals. The diet does not endorse adding substitutions to the foods that are mentioned. Dieters should also drink plenty of water throughout the diet.
Cabbage soup, as well as fruit, are the only things that the diet can eat on the initial day. Unsweetened drinks such as coffee, cranberry juice and tea are also allowed. On the diet’s second day, vegetables can be eaten in any quantity, as long as they are not beans, peas or corn. The dieter can’t eat any fruit this day, but can eat as much cabbage soup as he likes. On the third day, both fruit and vegetables can be eaten, as well as the cabbage soup. Baked potatoes are not allowed during this day, but any other vegetable is approved.
For the fourth day of the diet, bananas and skim milk are the only foods to be eaten aside from the soup. The dieter can eat up to eight bananas on that day. The idea behind banana and milk day is that the sweet fruit will stave off any cravings for sweets. The fifth diet day marks the first time that the dieter can eat something other than fruits and vegetables. This day allows the dieter to eat beef, fish or skinless chicken weighing up to 20 ounces and as many as six tomatoes. Because an abundance of uric acid can be a problem on this day, plenty of water is required and the dieter has to eat one bowl or more of cabbage soup.
The sixth day calls for beef and unlimited vegetables. The dieter is not allowed any baked potatoes, and soup is required at least once. On day seven, the diet requires fruit juices without extra sweeteners, brown rice in any quantity and unlimited vegetables. Cabbage soup should be eaten at least once. The diet bans drinking soda, even if it’s diet soda. The Cabbage Soup regimen also disallows drinking alcohol and eating any bread.
The Cabbage Soup Diet does result in weight loss. However, it lacks many of the nutritional necessities that many other weight loss programs take into account. Because of these deficiencies, it is not recommended to stay on the diet for more than the recommended seven-day period.

Barry Sears, a California biochemist, developed the Zone diet due to his own fear of having heart attacks like other family members. The diet consists of a specific arrangement of carbs, fat and protein eaten every day. Forty percent of the diet is made up of carbs, 30 percent is fat and 30 percent is protein. Keeping this balance is what keeps the blood sugar at a constant level and the hormones balanced. Another benefit of following the Zone is that weight loss occurs.
There is a great deal of evidence showing that consuming very little fat is an ineffective way to lose weight. The actual effect of eating a diet low in fat is that the body produces causes the body to create more insulin, which results in more fat being stored. This causes the failure of many diets that strictly limit fat. Another reason for its failure is that a diet low in fat is unsatisfying, leading to a larger appetite and more calories being eaten. To lose weight with the Zone, the dieter must consistently take in plenty of monounsaturated fats. Eating these fats keeps the body able to burn fat. If these fats aren’t eaten, the body’s insulin will be elevated, making it harder for it to burn fat.
There are a few easy methods to decide the correct quantity which is enough of every food type. The palm is about the size of the correct protein portion. With enough of the right fats, you will feel satisfied and not experience hunger. If you are eating the right amount of carbohydrates, your mind will feel clear. Eating just those portions every day is the goal of the Zone diet. The quantity of starchy vegetables is not given these limitations.
Besides eating the correct ratios, the diet also requires eating omega fatty acids. The right combination of omega-3 and omega-6 acids is important for a healthy heart as well as a healthy mind. The correct portions of fatty acids are available in the form of fish oil supplements. Dr. Sears was one of the originators of fish oil capsules, which deliver a healthy dose of the appropriate fatty acids.
Many studies have been carried out on to determine how effective the Zone diet is, and shown it to be a good weight loss technique. The adjustment period to the diet is also shorter than with some other popular diets. The initial side effect of fatigue is of short duration. To achieve a body that works in an efficient capacity, the dieter must stay with the recommended food ratios. Moods, energy and insulin levels are kept at a constant level by remaining on the diet. Mental agility also improves with the diet. Dr. Sears named the diet to reflect the perfect zone that is reached once the diet has been followed and insulin levels remain steady.

The Atkins Diet began in the late 60s when Dr. Robert Atkins uncovered a new way to deal with his own weight problem. Finding the pounds coming off, he then began helping his patients with the same diet. In 1972 he released Dr. Atkins’ Diet Revolution, which then became popular diet. He later created a new version of the book with new information in the late 90s. This renewed interest in the diet, and an entirely new industry started, producing foods that would help dieters with the diet.
The primary principle of the diet is to take in a diet that is low carb and high protein. To achieve the greatest amount of weight drop, there are four distinct phases that the diet incorporates. The four parts of the Atrkins Diet were created to start the process of weight loss and to keep at the ideal weight in perpetuity.
The initial part of the diet, induction, is sometimes the most difficult to get used to for many dieters. This initial phase has the dieter eating a very low quantity of carbohydrates- limited to just 20 grams or less every day. Twelve or more of the carbohydrate grams have to be derived from vegetables. The number of fat grams taken in is not factored into the diet- only the number of carbohydrate grams. A multivitamin supplement is to be taken to ensure that no vitamins are left out of the diet.
The next Atkins phase, called ongoing weight loss, permits the dieter to eat more carbohydrates. Every week the quantity of grams increases by 2, as long as weight loss continues. Dieters persist in the ongoing weight loss phase of the Atkins Diet until they achieve within 10 pounds or less of their original weight goal. To make sure that weight is still being lost, many people on the diet utilize ketosis sticks. These small pieces of paper are held in the urine and quickly change colors to quickly tell the dieter whether weight is coming off.
The third phase of the Atkins Diet, pre-maintenance, represents another raise in carb grams. During this phase, people on the Atkins Diet are allowed to eat an extra 10 grams of carbohydrates each 7 days, unless weight gain results. The principle idea of pre-maintenance is to find the number of carb grams that can be consumed without any weight being added. Once this level has been reached, the Atkins dieter is all set to set out for the final step to keep the weight off permanently.
Lifetime maintenance is makes the decision to keep the carb number at a level that keeps weight from fluctuating. The diet advises eating whole, foods that have not been processed throughout this phase. If the dieter gains any weight, the previous phases should be repeated until the extra weight is brought back down.
The number of carbohydrate grams that are tabulated during each step of the diet are known as “net carbs”. This number is the total number of carbs eaten, with the number of glycerin, fiber and sugar alcohol grams subtracted from the number. Those substances limit the effect of carbs on the body, and each gram cancels out one carb gram. Most of the Atkins Diet products, distributed through Atkins Nutritionals, are items with higher numbers of carb grams, but that are designed with fiber and sugar alcohol to force the number of net carbs lower.

The South Beach Diet was created by the cardiologist Arthur Agatston. South Beach is based on a mix of healthy carbohydrates and fats, which are combined to create a healthy and balanced diet. The unhealthy items forbidden from South Beach are the items Dr. Agatston believes to have bad carbohydrates. Bad carb foods such as white rice and white potatoes are not included in the South Beach Diet, while good carb foods such as sweet potatoes and brown rice are approved under the South Beach Diet guidelines.
This diet was created in the first place to care for Dr. Agatston’s cardiac patients by treating their insulin resistance. This effect of consuming too many bad carbohydrates can adversely affect the body’s ability to alter fat and sugar. Ingesting these carbohydrates can contribute to heart problems as well.
The diet is comprised of three main phases. In every phase, the dieter must eat the prescribed foods and not eat the ones that have bad fats in them. The initial step is the first two weeks of the South Beach Diet, during which the new dieter will stop being resistant to insulin. The body’s extra fat will then have to be burned for energy, which causes up to 13 pounds to be lost. The dieter eats three meals every day, consisting of nuts, eggs, fish, meat, vegetables and cheese every day. Most of these foods contain some degree of healthy fats that are good for the heart. This leaves the dieter feeling full and free from cravings for sweets, because so many meals are eaten every day.
In this next phase, whole grain foods, fruit and dairy items are allowed on this diet. The portions of these foods are kept small and the rest of the diet continues with proteins and healthy fats and carbohydrates. Small portions of red wine are acceptable during phase two of the South Beach Diet. During phase two, the dieter can expect to lose up to two pounds a week. This step continues as long as there is weight to be lost.
During step three, the weight loss is to be maintained without any further loss. Three whole grain servings and three fruit servings are consumed each day along with the other acceptable foods. The diet requires eating six times every day, including meals and regular snacks in between. This last step is responsible for keeping the weight from returning, and can also result in a healthy heart
While a dieter is following the South Beach Diet, there is no reason to count calories and there are no times when he is left hungry. This diet is built around staying satisfied instead of eating too little to feel satisfied. This prevents hunger from causing binges. It is recommended that most of the food eaten on the diet be natural rather than processed. Lean meats, rather than overly-fatty ones, are also recommended. Foods that have been formulated with the recommended foods are available from Kraft under the name South Beach Living.
In recent years, the diet has been studied to determine how practical this diet is. Studies published in 2004 and 2005 demonstrated that the South Beach dieters involved in the comparisons did lose a statistically significant amount on this diet.

Over the leading two posts in this series discussing uncomplicated information you could take advantage of to help out with your New year goals, we explored health and diet tips respectively. In today’s article, we shall look at some basic psychological concepts you might employ to support you even more within those two parts of your life, but in addition to lend a hand in alternative goals you may have made.
The key concept, which even without the others might bring about an extraordinary improvement, is the principle of “failure doesn’t exist”. Truly, that’s an unusual one to come to terms with, but think of it like this: let’s imagine your resolution for New Year was to not eat all sorts of fast food for 2008, and all of a sudden, as part of a pleasant day out with friends, dying for something to eat, you become aware that you’ve switched to auto-pilot mode and you’re already sat at your table with your favourite meal. This doesn’t signify that you’ve smashed your resolution, even if it’s just a few weeks into the new year. It categorically DOES mean that you have been given a occasion to discover something important. Perhaps you’ll have to be even more attentive when you’re out with friends again. Perhaps it’s to tell your friends about the New Year resolution and inviting them to encourage you - or embarass if you go into a Burger King. Perhaps it’s to keep away from going out with those friends in the future!
The next concept is that we never, ever do something foolish. Or at least, every single activity we act out has - or had originally - a positive intention. I don’t trust the idea that we establish a new habit without it having a good reason - to improve our life and often the lives of people around us somehow. The only problem is that sometimes our lives change, but we go on performing that activity, and it therefore develops into a thing we see as a problem. Or possibly we enrich one section of our life, but unintentionally impair some other.
This is crucial because you ought to come to terms with the idea that EVERY ACT you perform has a advantageous goal. Taking up smoking made you a rebel at school. Eating too much helped you over that high-school heart-break. A quick drink helps you be more friendly in nerve-racking circumstances. These benefits were categorically present when the habit started, even if they are no longer present. But even if that particular state of affairs is no longer going on (surely, you’re done with that high-school heart-break now you’re over fifty?) the original benefit may be (a good portion of cherry pie still makes you feel better).
So don’t put yourself down if your deep-rooted habits re-appear - this basically signifies that at the time you ceased doing the preceding habit, you also stopped yourself having that beneficial side-effect. Instead, sit peacefully for a few minutes, work out what the benefit is, and pursue alternative ways - several ways, to give you the maximum flexibility - to have that same original benefit. Then try stopping the earlier behaviour another time. If you discover enough techniques to get that same benefit, you will very nearly unconsciously finish carrying out the unwanted behaviour, given that you will no longer have to do it.
While these concepts might appear to be slightly exotic, you will find that if you try to adhere to them, your life will become a bit easier, a little more stress-free. These two key concepts help you keep up with your resolutions, and to recover in case you mess up. Try living by them over a few weeks and notice how much easier life might be.

There are many ways to counter anxiety, many of which have been used to relieve anxiety for a great number of years. Natural therapies such as Kava which is an anti-anxiety herb that has calming effects and can be soothing, is one answer. Kava is not only a muscle relaxant, but also a mild sedative. It is useful for combattingr stress, tension, anxiety, insomnia and irritability. It is often used for mild depression, anxiety, irritability and forms of tension.
Another herb, Verbena is known to relax your nervous system and is also taken for nervous disorders such as stress and exhaustion. Another herb, Passionflower, is known for it’s sedative powers and also relaxes the nervous system. Other benefits include it’s positive effects on nervous disorders such as epilepsy, anxiety, heart palpitations, stress and insomnia.
Bergamot, which many are familiar with, also aids in helping one regain self confidence, helping soothe anger and frustration, and in evoking feelings of tranquility. Another known herb, Frankincense, is often used to allay fear, soothe the mind, and give you a calming feeling. Cypress is known to soothe anger and evoke a calming effect. Lime is also recommended for a tired mind, , and good for overall fatigue and for stimulating the body and mind to rid itself of anxiety, depression and apathy. Jasmine, on the other hand, helps to diminish fear, and improves self confidence. Most people are aware of Lavender’s sedative properties, for alleviating stress, and for dealing with crisis situations. Patchouli is yet another substance that is excellent for dealing with depression and anxiety, while Rose is known to soothe the feeling of anger, anxiety and fear, and is also good for behavioral problems, and feelings of sadness. Sandalwood, which is very popular, is calming, and helps reduce tension and confusion, it also helps in building confidence, feelings of warmth and understanding, and is helpful in dealing with stress, fear, depression, and a busy and hectic lifestyle.
Another popular method of dealing with anxiety, is Meditation. Meditating has not only been shown to help anxiety disorders, but when practiced at least once a day, can help contain negative thoughts which can bring about certain anxiety. Practicing meditation can be a very powerful and useful routine to help eliminate negative thoughts. Meditation works by calming and relaxing your mind. Once your mind relaxes, your body then also relaxes as well. Relaxation techniques work on calming the various muscles throughout your body.
However, of all the different ways to counter anxiety, one of the most effective techniques has to do with “brainwave entrainment”. This is a proven method whereby, the imbalance of brainwaves, which is thought to be the root of anxiety, is safely corrected and restored. Once this process is completed, feelings of anxiety and stress are no longer an issue for most people. Although brain entrainment sounds like an expensive “procedure”, it is in fact as simple as popping in a specially designed CD and listening while you relax.

So you think “money” makes you happy? You think that’s true? Many feel that money can indeed “buy” you happiness. I recently got into this conversation with a group, and one young lady made the following comment…”Whoever said that money can’t buy you happiness is simply shopping in the WRONG place!”….Hmmm…Let me know what you think. My own answer may surprise you…then again..maybe not..
